New Year Resolutions, New Everything?

calvin-hobbes-new-years-resolutionsWe are 28 days into the new year and how are those New Year resolutions holding up?  Each year we set resolutions for ourselves as a way to improve upon the year before, and if you’re like most people, those resolutions have a way off falling off the radar.

So in order to help keep those resolutions going strong here is what Althea Medical Group suggestions:

1. Are your resolutions realistic? Ask yourself that question and if your New Year resolutions aren’t make adjustments to where they realistically will be attainable.  For instance, if you want to lose 50 pounds in 1 month that sounds great and Althea has exercise balls that will help you get there, but we all know you’d have to starve yourself in order to make that happen.  Being realistic and honest with yourself is the first step.

2. Have a game plan.  Ok, so your New Year resolutions are realistic, now what?  How are you going to get there?  The “how” of any resolution is the hardest part, because it requires effort and commitment.  For example, if financial freedom is what you’re after, research financial coaches in your area and set up an appointment with them.  After you’ve met with a couple of coaches and you’ve listen to how they are going to help you get there, make that commitment to go for it.

3. Evaluate regularly. You’ve made your commitment and you’re now on your way of losing weight and financial freedom, right?  If you don’t take the time to evaluate your New Year resolutions on a daily/weekly/biweekly/monthly basis, how will you measure your success?  Set a day each week on when you are going to evaluate your progress.  By doing so, it holds you accountable and let’s you evaluate what you did great that week and what you need to improve upon.

4. Reward yourself.  Who doesn’t like rewards?  You’ve made the commitment and you’re doing the work to achieve your New Year resolutions and rewarding yourself along the way is positive reinforcement.  Rewarding yourself after every 5 pounds lost, after every $1000 put towards retirement, after every credit card you’ve paid off will help complete your goals and help you move on to bigger and better!

Stability Balls in the Workplace

The use of stability balls in the workplace is growing increasingly popular. Employers have learned that happy, healthy employees are more productive and efficient. Companies are always looking for new ways to improve the mood and climate of the workplace and replacing a desk chair with a stability ball is one way.

Advantages of sitting on a stability ball

Sitting on a stability ball improves your stability and balance because you are constantly engaging your core to maintain your position. Stronger core abdominal muscles protect and strengthen the lower back. Their lack of armrests makes it nearly impossible to slouch or slump as your sitting, which improves posture. If you are someone who experiences lower back pain, sitting on a stability ball can reduce your discomfort. Stability balls put less stress on the spine than hard chair cushions.

Challenges of using a stability ball

Many people feel less than secure and stable when they first sit on a stability ball in place of an office chair. This is natural and it is a good idea to use the ball in short increment until you become used to having to balance. The lack of armrests and back support can mean that the upper body is not thoroughly and adequately supported. This issue is remedied by using the newer stability ball chairs that include back support, armrests and a base. Using these types of chairs is still easier on your spine but does not require that you engage your core and balance as intensely.

Importance of movement

When sitting on a stability ball it is hard to resist the urge to bounce a little. As long as you don’t get carried away, this is a great way to lighten your day and engage different muscles than sitting alone. It can wake you up and provide a short break that enables you to return to work with better focus. No matter what type of chair you sit on, studies show that sitting for long periods is not good for your spine so get up for short stretches and walks whenever your schedule allows.
